PAT RUILOBA FOR BERNALILLO COUNTY SHERIFF

“I will work with integrity and professionalism to keep Bernalillo County safe.  I will focus on strategies to successfully prevent and respond to crime, including working to ensure our children are safe in school.”

PRIORITIES AS SHERIFF

CRIME

It is apparent that rising crime in Bernalillo has begun to overtake police reform efforts and we have fallen behind in protecting our community. As sheriff, I will work diligently to stop crime by identifying offenders involved in narcotics trafficking, violent crime, property crime, and those who continue to victimize businesses and members in our community. I will work with local and federal courts to make our criminal justice system more just and fair so that it works to deter continued criminal activity.

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY

No issue is too small! I will focus on addressing behaviors – which may not always be criminal in nature – that detract from the overall quality of life in Bernalillo County. BCSO will be available to address issues in neighborhoods that signal disorder to ensure they do not lead to increased criminal activity or exploitation of communities.

COMMUNITY POLICING

BCSO will be available to talk with any community member about their concerns, respond to their safety issues, and enforce the law when needed. Neighborhood associations and watch groups, local social service agencies, and other local organizations play a key role in addressing the needs and quality of life within their communities.  It is also important that these entities partner with BCSO to support deputies in their work. It will be pivotal for BCSO to engage with these groups to better understand the criminal activity occurring in Bernalillo County communities. I am committed to connecting and developing relationships with community members and working to equip them with the knowledge and experience necessary to reduce crime in their neighborhoods.

TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

I will collaborate with county officials, BCSO staff, and community leaders to identify effective practices that will ensure the work of BCSO is transparent and accountable.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

BCSO deputies are highly visible and interact with the public on a constant basis. This underscores the need to ensure deputies are up to date on modern-day techniques for investigating crime, safety, use of force, and engaging communities.  Each BCSO deputy has an ethical responsibility to ensure the rights of the individuals they come into contact with are not violated.  I will work with BCSO leadership and other law enforcement agencies to develop culturally competent training courses – including job-embedded, reality-based training – that are uniquely customized to the different roles of BCSO employees.

AS BERNALILLO COUNTY SHERIFF, I WILL:

“I understand the need for department policies to evolve and meet the needs of the community, understand social trends to improve public safety, and build relationships with all of Bernalillo County’s communities. I will balance my commitment for a more effective, equitable, and thoughtful approach with a strong commitment to protect our community.”

“LET’S WORK TOGETHER.”
